The Bedroom Styling Basics

Your bedroom should feel like a sanctuary - the space in your home where you can truly relax. After a number of years designing a client's home, it’s apparent that the bedroom is one of the main places that gets overlooked in the home. While it might not be the most seen by visitors, it’s one of the rooms that we spend the most time in, so it’s worth putting your attention into.
Although every space will be different, I like to follow a few basic steps when designing a bedroom.
Step 1. Plan your layout effectively
If you’re starting from scratch or giving the room a simple refresh, identifying an effective furniture layout is the space to start. Your furniture choices will be dependent on a number of factors such as the size and shape of the room. Regardless, measuring is essential and will set the scene for what furniture you can purchase. Try and tape out the markings of furniture to see what will work best based on your measurements before splashing the cash.
Step 2. Choose your bed
The bed is most likely going to be the focal point of your room and it’s usually the first furniture piece I would always source for a client’s design project. Whether it be something minimal or eye-catching, the bed is going to set the tone for the rest of the room.
In a smaller space, I recommend using light-colour upholstered beds to create the illusion of openness and add softness to the space. On the other hand, in rooms where you want to make a statement, you could choose something that will add drama like a canopy bed.
Step 3. Select the bedside tables
The bedside table is typically the next piece of furniture I would look for. They anchor the bed as well as adding storage functions. Mixing and matching furniture styles is an effective way to create a curated look so I tend not to match the bedside tables with the bed frame itself. For example, if selecting an upholstered bed I would tend to go for a wooden or metal bedside table.
Step 4: Add storage essentials
Decorative objects are the best way to add character to your coffee table. Something beautiful and functional like a paperweight, candle or ornament will help to define your personality and make the space unique to you.
Be sure not to over clutter your coffee table by sticking with a rule of three when it comes to decorative objects. This 'rule' achieves the most effective look using a range of heights, colours and texture. Odd numbers are always more preferable when it comes to interior styling because it draws your eyes in to focus on all three objects rather than glancing over a symmetrical formation.
Step 5. Introduce soft furnishings
Whether it be curtains, cushions, rugs or bedding, layering materials helps to promote a cosy look and inviting appeal to your bedroom. I use rugs in almost every design to create a grounding feeling that offers warmth and texture. Adding a rug into your bedroom will elevate the space with a tone or pattern that is essential for a cosy look. When it comes to sizing, I like to leave some space between the bedside tables and beginning of the rug as well as making sure the material extends the end of the bed also. For a King-sized bed I’d go for a 9x12 rug, and for a Queen-sized bed 8x10.
Step 6. Lighting
Lighting makes all the difference to a room and sets the right ambience, especially in a bedroom. Consider layering your lighting, using different types of lighting (e.g. overhead, wall, table lamps, floor), to create a cosy space for any time of the day.
Step 7. Complete with decor
Once you have all the key pieces, it’s time for the best part! Styling is essential for your home to feel like you. Adding artwork, mirrors and accessories is going to bring the space to life and really show off your personality. Consider the smaller details as well and the overall look by adding vases on your bedside table or stacked books and candles to your chest of drawers - this will tie together all elements of the design to create a cohesive look.
