Sometimes finding the main pieces of furniture isn’t the hardest part of decorating your home. Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the process and just can’t get your space to feel ‘right’, and you can never be totally at ease in your own home. Finishing off a room so that it feels warm and cosy may be your answer. It’s all about the simple, easy touches that make all the difference but can often be the most difficult part of interior design.

Here are the key components that are sure to help bring any room together and give it that finishing touch to elevate your interior design skills.

Rug

Rugs are a lovely way of adding texture to a space and making a room look complete. Adding comfort for your feet and a layer of warmth, a rug is going to frame your furniture to connect all elements of the room. In a living area, for example, placing a rug beneath your coffee table is going to anchor the room and draw your attention to the centre of the room. This is an easy way to introduce subtle patterns or colour that inject some personality and character into your home

Window treatments

A comfortable, welcoming room is one that feels safe and secure. Make sure to add curtains or blinds to your windows to offer some privacy at night time. Curtains will add softness and promote a calming atmosphere. To avoid restricting any natural light from entering the room, a top tip is to hang the fabric 2-3cm above the floor so light is able to pass beneath. Also, linen curtains are a great idea if you still want to have plenty of natural light in your home but would like more privacy at night.

Small furniture

When all the main pieces of furniture are in place adding a few smaller pieces, that are also functional, will help bring a room together. A coffee table, wooden stool, ottoman bench or side table are all perfect examples of furniture items that can fill up negative space and add both styling and practical features to the room. They give you many styling opportunities to layer in ornaments, nature or cushions to give a room that ‘lived in’ effect for a homely, welcoming feel.

Lighting

Lighting is important in any room to make it both functional and warm. Every room should include multiple light sources from ambient to task lighting. Balance the light throughout the room to ensure light is spread from corner to corner. This lets you create ambience at night for that warming feel in the colder months.

Greenery

My top tip for every room design is to include some greenery. Whether it be plants, flowers or stems bringing the outdoors in - the ultimate layer. This is going to complete your space by adding life and texture to the room and also purify the air. You could either use a tall palm plant to fill up a corner of your room, a vase of beautiful flowers on your dining table to introduce some colour or a small potted plant on your bookshelf that will bring some organic shapes to the styling.
