Effortless Coffee Table Styling

The coffee table is placed at the centre of every living room, so why not showcase it as a focal point?

They serve many functions from resting your drinks to hidden storage but also as a place to display decorative pieces. When it comes to styling a coffee table, many view it as an unnecessary task but with the right accessories it can be the perfect way to add interest to your home so don’t overlook its decorative potential. Here’s some styling tips to help you create a well-balanced design for all types of coffee tables.

Set the foundation

Forming a base to build off is important when designing anything, but especially when styling a coffee table. One of the easiest ways to start is with a tray. Not only do trays bring the perfect base, they are great for organising everything that ends up there, whether that’s a candle or a stray remote.

Use books creatively

After all, they’re called coffee-table books for a reason. Large, illustrated books are designed to be left on display, where they encourage casual reading.

Try not to judge a book by its cover and choose those purely for their cover art. Books that reflect your personal interests - travel, artists, hobbies - allow you to inject personality into your home.

For a small or minimalist table, try using one or two books as a landing place for a vase or plant. On a larger table you could create a stack of books to add height.

Don’t forget greenery

Plants and flowers are a good way of anchoring your coffee table decor by adding height. An essential for any design, plants and flowers will bring your space to life allowing you to incorporate natural elements to please the eye. Whether it’s a full vase of flowers, potted greenery or sculptural branches they are sure to offer a hint of colour to your home.

Layer in decorative objects

Decorative objects are the best way to add character to your coffee table. Something beautiful and functional like a paperweight, candle or ornament will help to define your personality and make the space unique to you.

Be sure not to over clutter your coffee table by sticking with a rule of three when it comes to decorative objects. This 'rule' achieves the most effective look using a range of heights, colours and texture. Odd numbers are always more preferable when it comes to interior styling because it draws your eyes in to focus on all three objects rather than glancing over a symmetrical formation.
