What is Hygge? Everything you need to know about the Danish lifestyle trend

So, what is Hygge? Hygge is a Danish word meaning “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being”. It’s all about creating a certain feeling in your home and lifestyle - the little things in life that make us feel at home. From warm fluffy socks to a candle-lit room, or hot cup of tea in your favourite mug on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Pronounced hoo-ga, this concept of Scandinavian cosiness has grown in prominence in the interior design scene with many people wanting to know how they can incorporate comfort into their homes. Nordic influences are vastly becoming a sought-after trend so when embracing hygge into the home this generally involves a lot of soft textures, warm lighting and natural materials.

Here is some inspiration to help you embrace hygge into your living space.

Texture

Texture is essential to any interior design. They create inviting layers that provide visual interest and depth to a space while bringing a sense of comfort. To achieve a warm and cosy space, think about varying different textures from fur rugs to chunky knitted blankets.

Embrace the outdoors

Adding plants or flowers to any room brings an instant sense of freshness from outside to make a space feel complete and connected.

Natural materials

Danish homes are full of natural materials that bring the outdoors in. This includes exposed brick walls, wooden floorboards and stacks of logs waiting to be thrown onto an open fire. Just like combining textures, a good way to tap into the hygge trend is by mixing and matching different natural products together to create a room full of character that is unique to you.

Candles

Set the tone with a perfect, ambient light setting. You can introduce candles, a string of fairy lights, dimming lamps or light up the fireplace. Make sure the rooms that you unwind in or gather as a family has a few of these elements to create a glow that makes you want to stay.

Small details

Also known as the finishing touch, these decorative elements piece the final room together to elevate its cosiness and warmth and give it that ‘lived in’ appeal.

I hope this inspires you to spread some hygge vibes into your home this autumn and winter!
