How To Choose The Right White Pain

In theory, this should be easy because white is white - right? The colour that supposedly goes with everything. Yet, it’s one of the greatest interior design dilemmas! You only have to take a quick look on any paint company's website and see endless options to choose from.

Picking the right paint colour can be challenging. Sometimes it’s too grey which makes the room feel dark and dingy, and other times it can be too yellow - taking a step back in time to 70’s magnolia. I’m going to share some of my top tips for choosing your shade and how light can impact it.

There are 1000’s of white paints to pick from, so where do you start when navigating your perfect paint?

Is your room North facing?

If yes, it’s likely that your room gets little minimal light and will have a shadowy corner. The room may feel a little colder than others in your home so it’s important to pick a shade with warmer undertones. A yellow undertone will soften those dark corners and lift the space up.

Or South facing?

In contrast, should your room be South facing then it will be basking in natural light all day so it should already feel warmer. If you’re aiming for that fresh, white look then this time you’ll have to try and cool it down by picking a paint that has grey undertones. This will balance the look and prevent it from becoming too bright.

East or West

In this case, you’ll have natural sunlight for half the day so you have the choice how you want the room to feel. If you spend most of your mornings in this room and it’s East facing, you might want to cool it down, but if you want to warm up a West facing room in the morning, warm it up!

Think about how you are going to use this space, and when, to choose which way you want the look to go.

Samples, samples, samples

I recommend testing paint samples at different times of the day - morning, afternoon and evening - on each wall. How light hits one wall may look completely different on another.

Hopefully now you feel a little less overwhelmed and will find the process of choosing a paint much easier.
