How to Choose Artwork for Each Room of the Home

Artwork is a beautiful way to bring your personality into your homes. Filling the walls effectively, creates a focal point to decorate a wall purposefully and frame the furnishings. Art also contributes colour, warmth and texture to a room in many different ways. However, finding the right piece of art that works for each individual space can be an intimidating task if you aren’t sure what exactly you’re looking for and why.

Fortunately, I have a few tips to share that are going to give you a rounded insight into the mind of an interior designer when it comes to selecting the perfect artwork for your home.

Hallway

Starting with the hallway, this is the room where your guests will build their first impressions of your home so it’s good to set the visual tempo for the rest of your home. Choosing pieces that balance your room is the way forward. You can find balance in colour, texture, size or subject.

Moreover, having medium to large sized pieces are going to make an impact by creating a focal point right as you walk into the home. One way to do this is by forming a gallery wall, which allows you to get the best of both!

Living Room

Moving onto the main event - the living room. Arguably, this is the room where you will spend the majority of time so you’ll want to inject some personality into the space. Find a piece of art that tells a story and highlights feelings, places or subjects that are important to you.

Because this room is probably one of the largest in your home, you’ll have the chance to use multiple pieces of art throughout. A range of art pieces, wall-mounted canvases to smaller picture frames, will elevate your room by experimenting with height.

Bedroom

Next up, your bedroom is a place that should feel particularly calming and peaceful so layering it with softer artwork is going to help transform it into a retreat. Choose a subject that invokes feelings of serenity while complimenting the overall colour palette of the room to ensure there is little contrast.

The obvious place to hang art in the bedroom would be over the bed. Another way to make the room appear connected is to layer in smaller pieces to compliment the main piece.

Kitchen

The kitchen is such a good place to include smaller pieces of art that will introduce texture and colour. If you have open shelving some smaller vintage pieces are going to add character to your display, while picture frames play with height for an interesting look. You could also prop artwork next to greenery or on countertops and when layered in with tableware, to create small vignettes,  it instantly adds warmth to the space.
