There’s so much more you can do with your walls than simply painting them white and calling it a day. If your style tends to lean towards the more neutral end of interior design, you probably wouldn’t consider a bold feature wall or patterned wallpaper. Something that meets in the middle, providing texture and soft colour to the walls, would be limewash paint.
What Is Limewash Paint?
Limewash is manufactured using natural elements and renewable sources, such as clay and minerals, to create a thin layer of limestone. Colours are formed by the natural pigments of materials used to create the paint, which produces shades of natural beauty.
There are also other natural benefits to limewash paint: It’s breathable, nontoxic, and eco-friendly, and the high pH level means that it’s bacteria and mould-resistant. Also, because limewash paint contains no VOCs (volatile organic compounds), its application is practically odourless.
How To Apply Limewash Paint
Limewash is very different from normal paint and requires a little more expertise in its application. That’s not to say you can’t do it yourself, there’s just a few extra measures that must be taken.
Step 1 - Make sure your surface is clean and well-prepped. Stir the paint to make sure there’s no pigment left at the bottom.
Step 2 - Apply paint with a brush. Using a cross-cross motion in an area no larger than 1m², spread the paint thinly using horizontal, vertical, and diagonal strokes before working the paint in vigorously using a circular motion. If Limewash is applied too thickly this application may result in cracking.
Step 3 - Build colour and texture. Only apply one coat per day, allowing time for each coat to carbonate. Insufficient carbonation time may result in loss of adhesion of the previous coat.
