My recent trip to beautiful Bali, Indonesia, has offered so much design inspiration. With its magical mix of culture, people, nature, culinary delights and beautiful accommodations, it really is one of a kind.

Bali is home to some of the most beautiful and unique interior design styles in the world. From traditional Balinese designs to modern and contemporary styles, there is something for everyone.

I have to admit that the charm of these interiors is also partly due to their enchanting location and breathtaking scenery. But I believe there are some interesting elements that could certainly be incorporated into any project that would bring out the atmosphere of this magical island.

What characterises the Balinese style?

The interior style reflects an aesthetic that revolves around nature and balance. Natural materials, craftsmanship, greenery and the outdoors are balanced as a reflection of the island’s culture. The result of this creates a minimalist approach to interior design that is inspired by the natural environment and laid-back culture.

Its uniqueness represents the beauty of Bali’s traditional craftsmanship of materials such as woods, bamboo and ceramics. You will find many handcrafted furnishings from teak furniture to textured rugs, local artwork and lots of rattan. This gives the effect of bringing the outdoors in, a trend that you will find in any part of the world, to provide that same sense of well-being nature offers.

Natural Materials

Using natural materials is going to be the best way to represent a Balinese influence in your own home. Accessible materials include wood, stone and bamboo to bring warmth, texture and character into your home that is reminiscent of the Bali style.

Earthy Tones

The main colour palette used for this style is clearly defined by the beautiful surrounding nature and materials used. A soothing, earthy colour palette perfectly depicts Bali’s relaxing culture.

Rustic Decor

What makes Bali’s interiors so unique is their ornaments and artwork. With streets lined of unique, one-of-a-kind handicrafts such as macrame, textiles and local crafts, there’s an endless source of inspiration.

Traditional Prints

Batik is a traditional Balinese technique of decorating textiles with wax-resist dyes. Originating on the island of Java, the art form has diverse patterns influences from a variety of cultures. The characteristics of batik design include ornate geometric shapes, intricate symbols, and dots.
