This special time of year is something we all look forward to. Decorating the home, on the other hand, can sometimes be seen as a daunting task. I’ve pulled together a few tips and tricks to make this festive tradition much more enjoyable.

Whether you’re a seasoned decorator or festive novice it’s key to put emphasis on creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere that embodies the spirit of Christmas - it’s not all about focusing on aesthetics.

No. 1 | Hang a wreath or garland

Adding greenery to your Christmas decor brings a nice contrast to all the sparkle. Real or faux, it’s the perfect opportunity to introduce freshness to your home and create a focal point to your room. To help compliment your chosen colour palette and theme, elevate the look by adding personalised decorations from ribbon to berries or dried orange slices.

No. 2 | Add a table centrepiece

Once the tree is up, you’ve decorated your fireplace with a beautiful garland and dotted traditional ornaments throughout your home the best finishing touch is to fill the spaces that you wouldn’t necessarily think to decorate. The dining table is an integral part to Christmas Day so why not make a feature out of it all season?

A successful tablescape could include a vase, table wreath, candles or even fairy lights. Play around with height, texture and colour for added interest. The most important thing to consider is ensuring the decor is in proportion with the size of your table. It shouldn’t be overcrowded and leave enough space for serving dishes and glassware.

No. 3 | Choose a colour scheme to suit your existing decor

Not only in terms of Christmas decor, but the first thing to think about in any design concept is colour. Colour and theme should naturally go hand-in-hand. For example, when using accents of red, green and gold you would tend to lean towards a more traditional palette in comparison to using natural for a scandi look.

Use ornaments that seamlessly fit into your current look - whether that’s colour or style. This makes the festive decor appear as an extension to your current style rather than something that is taken out of the attic year-on-year without any thought.

No. 4 | Take inventory of household items

No doubt you already have an abundance of collected decor hiding away in the attic. Before any decorating begins, it would make sense to see what ornaments and decor you already have stored away and decide what new items are really necessary. It may be the case that you simply need to refresh your collection with a few new pieces, or bring in a different colour that compliments a previous year’s theme.

Meanwhile, any decorations that you know you won’t use can be donated or set aside for another year to keep you from feeling overwhelmed.

If you have any sentimental decorations or ornaments that don’t match your theme or colour scheme, still use them anyway. Treasure those items that have been passed down the years - this is key to the Christmas season.

After searching high and low, I’ve narrowed down some of my favourite Christmas decor picks this season that will give you some inspiration for your own home…
